Recovery System 2026

Recovery Co-Lead · Waterloo Rocketry · 2025–2026

The Recovery System is a single-step dual-deploy parachute system designed to safely return a UW Rocketry competition rocket from an apogee of 70,000 ft. A drogue chute deploys at apogee to stabilize descent, then the main chute deploys at 2,000 ft for full recovery. The entire system has to survive a 15,000 lbf shock load while staying within a strict mass budget. This is a flight-critical structural engineering problem with one chance to work in flight. I joined UW Rocketry as Recovery Co-Lead in September 2025 and led the mechanical design of the system, managing 10+ engineering students across the recovery subsystem teams.

Experience

2025–Present

Recovery Co-Lead · UW Rocketry

  • Led mechanical design of a competition rocket's dual-deploy parachute recovery system, managing 10+ engineering students across the recovery subsystems.
  • Modeled the full electrical hardware stack into the boat CAD (battery, motor, harnesses, controls) and verified the hydrofoil lift mechanism's travel range and clearances with SolidWorks kinematic motion studies.
  • Standardized a hardware-in-the-loop bench so deployment logic is verified before vehicle integration, eliminating two historical day-of failure modes.
2025

Mechanical Engineer · ENVGO

  • Reduced pump-housing tolerance stack from ±0.4 mm to ±0.15 mm via revised datum scheme, eliminating post-machining at the contract manufacturer.
  • Owned the DFM review for two injection-molded enclosures shipped to first-article inspection inside the 12-week co-op window.
  • Built a Python tooling pipeline that generated GD&T inspection sheets directly from SolidWorks drawing metadata.
2026–Present

Lead Engineer · Novika Technologies

  • Built and shipped a hardware-adjacent SaaS used by independent engineering shops to track CAD revision history.
  • Sole engineer across product, infrastructure, and customer development; first 12 paying users acquired through cold outbound.

About

I am a second-year mechanical engineering student at the University of Waterloo. I work on hardware that has to leave the bench. Recovery systems for sounding rockets, industrial-scale 3D printers, and arm-mounted mechanisms that have to survive thousands of cycles. I care about the parts most people skip. The hand calcs that catch what the FEA misses, the ground tests that have to pass before anyone fires anything, and the electrical-mechanical integration that does not surprise the team at assembly. Alongside the mechanical work I lead engineering at Novika, an AI material specification platform I co-built for interior designers.
